Matthew 16:13-17
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah;
but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona,
because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you,
but My Father who is in heaven.
This passage clearly shows that Jesus’ disciple Simon (Peter) received a revelation of the true identity of Jesus as the Messiah, from God the Father. The Lord desires all to know Him, have a close friendship with Him, and hear His voice.
Peter’s declaration came in the middle of Jesus’ ministry. Considering many scriptures, most branches of the Church believe that the disciples would not have been ‘born again’ at that time, but that the Holy Spirit was with or upon them. At Pentecost, in an upper room, the Holy Spirit came like ‘tongues of fire’ upon each, and they were ‘filled’ with the Spirit then.
It is likely that Peter didn’t realize the Father had spoken to him, since Jesus told him plainly. So how did he receive such a revelation direct from heaven? Peter was one of the key disciples, to be called an apostle later and take part in setting up the Church. He was committed to Jesus as Master, was daily walking with Him, and obeying along the way. His sincere heart and submission made the way.
Anyone who believes Jesus is God, who paid the penalty of our sin whilst a man and rose again, and puts their trust in Him as Lord, can receive His Spirit within (born again). This is a requirement for salvation and eternal life. The Lord will then guide, teach, lead and comfort them through life. He can express His great love to those who are yielded and obedient; His children. What a privilege.
Being taught and led by the Holy Spirit is the way of life for a disciple. Spending time with God in prayer, reading His Word (the Bible) and flowing with Him is also a protection. Learning to recognise His voice, and to learn His ways takes time, but is a treasure! Scripture states that He even shares His secrets at times with those He can trust.
Scripture cautions us, however, to avoid unforgiveness and unbelief, which will damage our closeness to God (and others) and our ability to hear from Him. We must forgive offenses, and believe God’s Word.
Where is your heart towards God? Are you in the place to hear Him?
